Inscriptions

Ljubljana

Cities are densely packed with symbols, signs, inscriptions, and other visual messages. They are an important part of public communication, an urban language that is sometimes understood only by locals and sometimes by everyone. As we encounter them for years and years, they become self-evident to us, and we no longer notice them; they have entered our subconscious.

Denis’ perspective through the camera lens reveals the intriguing aesthetics of Ljubljana’s inscriptions. They are not, for the most part, large, screaming, shiny, bright and thus disturbing, as in any big city, but they conquer quietly, with design, and sometimes even with concept. They, like the buildings on which they stand, are a memorial to the era in which they were built, an expression of the ideas that prevailed during the socialist era.

They all have one thing in common: they bring to life the structure on which they stand. Because some of the activities emphasised by inscriptions no longer exist, inscriptions serve as a point of nostalgia, memory, return, and a mental map of the past.

We chose a few public inscriptions that have become almost iconic over time and are likely familiar to every Ljubljana resident.
